How to Get Book Reviews

how to get book reviews

Are you an author wondering how to get book reviews? Submitting a book for review can be a nerve-wracking process, but it’s also one of the most effective ways to gain exposure. By having your book reviewed on blogs and shared on social media, you’re opening the door to new readers who may not have discovered your book otherwise. It also adds to the overall marketing strategy, as you can use the reviews to promote your book further. Every positive review builds momentum and helps with word-of-mouth marketing.

How to Get Book Reviews: It Starts With the Ask!

I gladly accept books for review (including indie and self-published books)! Please note, I do prefer a hardcopy or audiobook format, and here are my genre preferences:

  • women’s fiction
  • literary fiction
  • rom-com
  • psychological thriller
  • mystery

If your book is in any of the following categories, please consider the Meet the Author feature rather than a review because I will probably not accept it for review:

  • poetry
  • memoir
  • fantasy
  • science fiction

What should you expect after you submit a book review request?

After you submit your request, one of three things will happen:

  1. If your book sounds like a good fit for me, I will respond with the mailing address for you to send it to. When I receive your book in the mail, I will do a post (like this one) on TikTok to show my viewers that I’ve received your book. It typically takes me 4-6 months to read the books I receive and then I will post reviews on my blog, Amazon and Goodreads.
  1. If I know right away that your book is not a good fit for me, I will respond and decline your request.
  1. If I’m on the fence about your book, I will put it up for a vote on TikTok (like this one) and let my viewers decide whether or not I should read it. I will then reach out to you either way to let you know what the voters decide. As mentioned above in number one, I share the books I receive on TikTok, reviews can take approximately 4-6 months, and I share those on my blog, Amazon and Goodreads.

I can’t wait to hear about your book!

Why Reviews Matter for Indie Authors

Getting book reviews is essential for indie authors who are building credibility. Reviews serve as social proof and give potential readers confidence in your work. A positive review can sway someone to purchase your book, especially if you’re just starting out and don’t have a large following. Additionally, reviews on platforms like Amazon and Goodreads can improve your book’s visibility in search results, helping it reach a wider audience. Reviews can also provide invaluable feedback that helps you grow as an author and fine-tune your craft.

How to Make the Most of Your Reviews

Once you start receiving reviews, be sure to leverage them to the fullest. Share snippets of positive reviews on your social media channels, website, and author newsletter. Highlight any unique or powerful feedback that could entice new readers. If a reviewer mentions a particular scene or theme, use that as an opportunity to create engaging content around it, sparking discussions with your audience. Remember, each review is a tool to further market your book!
