  1. When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I remember when I was 5 years old, I wrote my first short story — a two-pager — and showed it to my Mother. She praised me highly indeed, and put my story up on the fridge — where it remained for a long time. From that very moment, I wanted to be a writer. After giving her that story, Mother always took the time to buy me journals and diaries, and was always pleased to see my nose buried in them. By the time I was 12, I could see my books in my mind. It would be another 50 years before I took the plunge – but writing my first book was the BEST thing that EVER happened to me. It was the best gift I could have ever given myself!

  1. Does writing energize or exhaust you?

I was born to write. I’ve written since day one. I write ALL of the time. Throughout my entire journey, I’ve journaled, chronicled, corresponded, note-taken, drafted, edited, transcribed, news-lettered, blogged, white-papered and then some … writing eulogies, letters to Heads of State, and even Pope Francis!  …Even more, I’ve maintained myriad epistolary relationships along the way.

These last years I’ve discovered that I truly have a powerful voice. I’ve also finally given myself permission to free that voice, and take it out to the world. So now, I’m all about publishing!  I trust myself and my writing implicitly. I could no more stop writing than I could stop breathing.

  1. How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

I started writing my first book because I had vital knowledge to share with the masses about career management. I saw it as creating one of two or three legacy pieces I wanted to create. But the underlying reason I wrote the book is because I knew I needed to learn how to write and publish a book, as, in my heart of hearts, I my goal was to write two seminal pieces on animal rescue — they will be powerhouses! So I did the easy book first. And now, I know much more about how to properly develop the narrative. I’m looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experience in animal rescue and advocacy, and excited about making that knowledge and experience available to the next generation of rescuers.

  1. Is writing your full-time career? Or would you like it to be?

I am on the cusp of writing full-time. When I’m not writing, I am an executive career coach. And I walk my own talk: I have been setting myself up to write full-time for about 2-3 years now. In another year or two, I WILL be transitioning from my day job to writing full-time. I have two more books planned: one on domestic animal rescue best practices; and a companion piece on international wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. By the time I turn 70, I definitely my turn my sights towards acquiring a PhD!

  1. If I could tell my younger writing-self anything, it would be:

“Trust your instincts girl, and.just.write!”
