I’ve committed to reading more personal development books this year because I really enjoy them. The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins was the second one on my list.

It’s a quick read. I finished it in less than two weeks reading just 5-10 minutes per day, if that gives you an idea.

There’s not a lot of substance to this book. It’s good, don’t get me wrong. It’s very motivational, especially if you need a little kick in the butt. However, if you’re not a huge reader, you can learn just as much about the 5 second rule by searching Mel Robbins on YouTube and watching a few of her videos.

The writer in me got a little irritated by the excessive use of the word “that”. Here’s an example of one sentence that almost made me throw the book out the window:

“The more that you practice acts of courage, the more that you will believe you are in control of your life, and as a result, the more confident that you will become.”

I wish an editor would have taught the author this rule: If you can cut out a usage of the word “that” without impacting clarity, do it!

Anyway, besides my grammar neurosis, I did think the book was inspirational and worth reading. Here are a few of my favorite quotes:

“You are one decision away from a completely different life.”

“It is not the big moves that define our lives; it’s the smallest ones.”

“You can’t change the past, but in five seconds you can change your future.”
