Meet the Author Monday: Kathy L Wheeler

Kathy L Wheeler

It’s Meet the Author Monday! Each week we meet a new author and get to know a little about them, their writing process, publishing experience, and tips for other writers. Today we’re talking to Kathy L Wheeler, author of Gaming Hell Christmas Volume 2.

About Kathy L Wheeler:

Kathy L Wheeler is an indie author of thirty-five contemporary and historical novels and novellas that range from sweet to spicy. She has a BA in Management Information Systems from the University of Central Oklahoma that includes a vocal minor. She loves the NFL, NBA, musical theater, travel, reading, writing and, just to scratch the singing itch…. karaoke. She and her lawyer and musically-talented husband migrated to the Pacific Northwest with their loveable and neurotic dog Angel and love it.

About Gaming Hell Christmas Volume 2:

GAMING HELL CHRISTMAS – VOLUME 2: Mysteries abound at London’s most fashionable Hell.

The Thief Who Stole Christmas – Amanda McCabe
A man who has never broken the rules, and a woman who just might break his heart! But Christmas is always a time for second chances…

As one of Miss Greensley’s Girls, a member of the exclusive club la Sous Rose, and famous author Lady L, Victoria Lanford moves easily through Society ballrooms. Few people know how her unhappy childhood and anxiety led her to pickpocketing (yet, she did return the jewels)! When she comes face-to-face with old flame Rhys Neville, Earl of Hammond, she knows the kind-hearted, straight-laced, devilishly handsome lord is not for her—especially once the past comes back to haunt them. Why, then, can’t she stop thinking about their kisses?

The Kerse Who Saved Christmas – Kathy L Wheeler
Kerse: He, of the no nonsense approach, is stymied by She, a woman considered long past prime marriageability who needs a keeper more than he requires a wife. Yet the dreamy-eyed, impractical, and much too optimistic Philomena still manages to steal his heart despite her unrealistic beliefs and trust in fortune tellers.

  1. What are common traps for aspiring writers?

Getting caught up in the rabbit hole of research. Believing you’ll be the overnight success. Even writers who appear to have made it overnight spent years of learning their craft.

  1. Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

A little of both. I like to surprise myself mostly. Because, it’s a given you can’t please everyone. So, writing has to make me happy first. What comes through on the page is what your readers will feel, not necessarily the words, if that makes sense.

  1. Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?

I’ve seen it happen, and I don’t understand it.

  1. What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

Amanda McCabe, obviously. Alicia Dean for sure another.

  1. How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

Reviews change how you see your own work.

  1. What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?

RAM 2022! A whole other level. Just saying.

  1. As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

I’m a Leo through and through. I attack writing as I do everything else. With whole-hearted intentions… and, I happen to be good at following through.

  1. How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

I have about 5 that are projects in ready-to-start mode when time and opportunity asserts themselves.

  1. Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?

So, this is an excellent question, and I have a great example. A couple of months ago I was on a call in a contemporary rom-com group and was laughing how I had two reviews, one right after the other. Honestly, if you list reviews my most recent, these two show up together:

One of the women in the group said I should create a meme. I didn’t know if she was kidding and decided to do it. They all agreed it was a good idea. I also tiktok’d it. 😊

Here’s the meme:

It was too good an idea to pass on.
