<Sigh> I don’t even know where to start with this book…
First of all, I discovered it from a New York Times article about how TikTok is becoming an influential platform for publishers and bestseller lists. The article told the story about how E. Lockhart, author of We Were Liars, noticed her book had hit the bestseller list again many years after publication. The author herself had not been promoting her book on TikTok, but readers were doing that for her. Of course, this piqued my interest and I had to purchase a copy of the book.
It’s in the Young Adult category, so I was a little worried that I wouldn’t like it. However, I would say this is for readers ages 15 and up. If you’re a parent, especially a parent of teens, this book will get you!
I knew there was something shocking about the book from the TikTok videos I saw about it. I kept trying to figure out what it was going to be, but I never would have been able to guess. Towards the end, I gasped out loud and was nearly in tears for the last few chapters.
We Were Liars is heart-wrenching, shocking, maybe even life-changing. It is hands down the best fiction book I’ve read this year!
