Google Plus is to me what Facebook is to Michael Hyatt – I just don’t get it.
I started this blog in 2010 with the intention of blogging the content for my book – Book Marketing with Social Media. I took a break for awhile, but after recently recommitting myself to this goal I spent some time reading over the content I had written so far. While doing this, it quickly became clear to me that I had been focusing more on the social media channels I was most familiar with, i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn.
I have found that authors of social media marketing books are often guilty of this. In my research I have read a number of social media marketing books and have noticed that even those folks who we consider to be social media experts tend to focus more heavily on one or two social media channels while barely scratching the surface of others. I can understand why this happens, but I’ve decided I want my coverage to be more comprehensive for those authors who want to promote their books on any of the most popular social media channels, not just the ones I personally prefer. There are many other social media channels, i.e. Instagram, Tumblr and Google+, that offer equal (maybe even better!) opportunities for marketing a book. Just because I am less familiar with them does not mean I should not cover them in my book, so I decided I would need to push myself outside of my comfort zone a little bit as I complete the first draft of this book.
As a result, I dug a little deeper to find some books about marketing on those social media channels that I was less familiar with so that I could read them and apply the theories more specifically to book marketing. Last night I started reading What the Plus by Guy Kawasaki, and just four pages into it I was already asking myself, “Why aren’t we all using Google+!?”
I look forward to learning from Kawasaki and will share what I learn in some upcoming blog posts. If you want to make sure you don’t miss any of the posts on this topic, subscribe to my blog and new posts will be delivered right to your inbox!
