On Mondays I post an interview with a social media marketing expert. My blog focuses on using social media to promote books (particularly self-published books), and I believe authors can really learn a lot about successful social networking by following the experts.
This week we meet Jamie Turner, Chief Content Officer for BKV’s 60 Second Marketer and co-author of “How to Make Money with Social Media.”
KS: Tell me about your company – how it was created and what you do.
JT: The 60 Second Marketer was originally designed as a lead generation tool for my parent company, BKV Digital and Direct Response. It’s an online magazine that condenses complex marketing topics down to 60-second sound videos and blog posts. The concept is that marketing people are too busy to read 25-page white papers, so we read them for them and distill the key points down to short, accessible videos and blog posts.
KS: Who do you feel can benefit from a social media marketing strategy?
JT: Social media isn’t right for every company. For example, I had a friend who owns a windshield repair franchise and he called me to do some consulting on social media. But after talking with him for a while, I realized that he didn’t really need social media. After all, his franchisor was going to handle the corporate Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter pages. And nobody is really all that interested in windshield repair – until they have a crack. But until they have a crack in their windshield, they don’t want to connect.
On the other hand, if you have a company or an organization that people are passionate about, then you’re golden. That’s why Apple, the NFL, the March of Dimes and others have so many followers on social media.
KS: How long have you been blogging and what is the primary focus of your blog?
JT: I’ve been blogging for 4 years and have written over 700 blog posts. Our primary focus is on providing tools, tips and tutorials for marketers around the globe.
KS: What is your favorite social networking site? Why?
JT: I have all the necessary social media sites for the 60 Second Marketer, including a YouTube channel, Facebook Fan Page, LinkedIn Group and Twitter account. But my favorite social media tool is my weekly e-newletter where I get to provide marketing insights to thousands of marketers around the globe. And, yes, I do consider email marketing a social media platform because it provides an avenue for a dialogue with your readers.
KS: What is your #1 piece of advice for social networking newbies?
JT: Like a marriage, social media requires consistent effort. You can’t just do it in 15 mintutes a day. You have to do it consistently throughout the course of the day.
KS: You are the author of How to Make Money with Social Media. Tell me a little about your book.
JT: It’s an insider’s guide on how to make money with social media. After all, businesses shouldn’t do social media to be social, they should do social media to make money. This book provides a roadmap for people interested in getting a top-to-bottom look at how to set up, launch and run a social media campaign.
KS: Why did you decide to write it?
JT: Nobody had written a book on how to generate revenue with social media before. All the previous books were about the fundamentals, not about social media ROI.
KS: What makes your book different from other social media/marketing books?
JT: It provides a roadmap for people interested in measuring their social media campaigns on an ROI basis.
KS: Do you plan to publish more?
JT: Yes, I’m under contract to write a second book which I’m working on now. It’ll be about mobile media – the next big thing.
