What is Social Media?

According to Wikipedia, social media is “media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques.”  Social media is shared through social networking sites, where users come together and create friendships (two-sided, i.e. Facebook) or fan-based relationships (one-sided, i.e. Twitter).  Users share information with one another and have control over their information “feed,” or what information they receive.

Social networking sites are ever-increasing, but here is a list of the 10 most popular sites in terms of number of users:

  1. Facebook
  2. Twitter
  3. Habbo (teens)
  4. Bebo
  5. Tagged
  6. Orkut
  7. MySpace
  8. Friendster
  9. LinkedIn
  10. hi5

Previously I have discussed how to get started on Twitter and how to set up a Facebook Page.  Next we’ll talk about LinkedIn – why to use it and how to enhance your profile to promote your book.
